Dr. Ivar Mendez, Professor of Neurosurgery
Director of the Virtual Care and Remote Presence Robotics Programs and the Virtual Health Hub
Dr. Ivar Mendez is a Professor of Neurosurgery and Director of the Virtual Care and Remote Presence Robotics Programs and the Virtual Health Hub. He earned his MD and PhD in Anatomy at the University of Western Ontario, where he also completed his neurosurgical training.
A pioneer in remote and robotic healthcare, Dr. Mendez led the world’s first long-distance telementoring neurosurgery (2002) and introduced remote neuromodulation programming (2013). He previously founded the Halifax Brain Repair Centre, served as Head of Neurosurgery at Dalhousie University, and was the Fred H. Wigmore Professor and Provincial Head of Surgery at the University of Saskatchewan.
A Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the American College of Surgeons, he has received numerous honours, including the Canadian Red Cross Humanitarian Award and appointment as an Officer of the Order of Canada for revolutionizing virtual care and robotic-assisted medicine worldwide.

Dr. Scott J. Adams, MD, PhD, MEd, FRCPC,
Cardiothoracic radiologist at Royal University Hospital
Dr. Scott J. Adams, MD, PhD, MEd, FRCPC, is a cardiothoracic radiologist at Royal University Hospital and serves as Director of Research for the Virtual Health Hub at the University of Saskatchewan. He earned his MD and PhD as a Vanier Scholar at the University of Saskatchewan, where he received the Governor General’s Gold Medal. Dr. Adams completed fellowships in cardiovascular and thoracic imaging at Stanford University, Harvard Medical School, and Massachusetts General Hospital, and holds a Master of Education in Higher Education from the University of Toronto.
His research focuses on the intersection of cardiothoracic imaging, artificial intelligence, and equitable access to care. His work has been published in The Lancet, Journal of the American College of Radiology, and CMAJ, earning numerous national and international awards, including the Amis Fellowship and AI Health Research Fellowship. Dr. Adams also contributes to advancing medical education, innovation, and patient-centered care across Canada.
